Offensive?

Kyle recorded a snippet of the evening news this past week that didn’t surprise me considering it came from this news network, but the more I thought about it, the more incensed I became. The anchors, Paul and Sharon were reporting on the event that trumped all other headlines of the day, Britney Spear’s new hairdo (or lack thereof), because apparently that is considered “news” and important, breaking news at that. At the end of the videotaped footage, Paul says (and this is a word for word transcript) that the bald head doesn’t matter because she still has a “hot bod, well…maybe not as hot as she used to be,” to which Sharon, who appears shocked beyond belief and utterly disgusted, exclaims “where have you been”? So Paul defends his position and says, “ok, she had a couple kids…she’s not bad.” Again, Sharon says “where have you been,” and goes on to say this priceless nugget, “there’s a scar…there’s a whole lot going on…now, she can work it back into shape, but where have you been”? Trust me, I am no fan of Brit Brit, but that comment about the scar really pissed me off (actually the entire dialogue and it’s further objectification of women did). There are a slew of things that disgust me about Britney, but her c-section scar isn’t one of them. I’d love to see what the ladies over at Shape of a Mother would do with this one…

Oh, and this channel is the only one in Cleveland with a 10:00 news spot (as far as I know), so we tune in once in awhile for the weather updates, etc. I’m boycotting from now on.

I defend watching this news broadcast by calling it my guilty pleasure. It is easier to get some comedy with the news than stay up to watch Letterman or Conan.
