Up to the Challenge

I just signed up to do the DiabeticRunner 1000 mile Challenge for 2008. Currently, I have logged 21.35 miles, and my big running plans for the year should easily carry me above and beyond the 1000 mile mark.

I inherited Kyle’s nano when he got his beloved iPhone, so I’m debating whether or not to start using Nike+. I already have the Garmin, so when you factor in the Nike+/nano system with the GPS watch; insulin pump; fanny pack full of Clif bloks, meter, lancet, testing strips, cell phone; and additional sensor attached to my shoe, I’d be bordering on ridiculous (not to mention, highly susceptible to a lightning strike). However, the idea that my miles would be logged for me and simply uploaded to the challenge site does entice me a bit. We’ll see…

I was parent helper at preschool today, which makes me respect teachers even more. I have no idea how someone can willingly work with a room full of 3-4 year olds on a daily basis. Gotta love the kids, but they take more patience than I’m capable of. Kade falls apart when I’m there…crying at the drop of a hat, pouting, refusing to participate…not fun. Once a month is definitely enough…

I really need to do a Lou update. She has been talking more and more every day (the girl said broccoli yesterday…and attempted quesadilla…no joke), and growing up right before our eyes. She’s still as little as ever, but that girl can put down food bite for bite with her big brother (I just don’t know where it goes).

The holidays really did a number on everyone around here. I’m actually grateful that they are over. Kade can’t handle all the excitement and I can’t handle all the stress. We are very routine oriented, and it’s nice to be back to normal. Who knows how long it will stay that way, though…

Hey Erika! Wanted to let you know that I joined the challenge after reading your post…of course the 500 mile and not the 1000 mile challenge =). It will be a challenge and I’ll hopefully be raising awareness at the same time.

Erika, I highly recommend the nike+. For $30 it is a totally automated process and it is really fun to track your runs. A lot of the people I run with really like being able to call me and ask me what pace we were doing at certain parts of the runs.

I am doing a 1,000 mile challenge and have about 850 done. It was supposed to be with another Marine and my brother, but the other Marine bought a Garmin and PD’s iPod was stolen, so it is all me. If a trip to Iraq is in your future it is a MUST!!!

    p.s.
I find it funny that the “department of defense” blocks your flickr pictures on your blog because it allegedly contains nudity!!!! I can get to Jacki’s flickr no problem. Sometimes their filter doesn’t make any sense!

Heidi - That’s awesome that you signed on for the challenge. I think you’ll surprise yourself at what you are capable of…you are an amazing person!

John - Great to hear from you! I am in awe of the mileage you put in in Iraq…the heat has got to be unbearable. Way to go on your challenge…almost there!

The price of the Nike+ makes it nearly impossible to pass up…and almost everyone who uses it loves it, so I guess I’m sold.

That’s so wierd that my photos are blocked…must be the pregnant belly pics…pretty racy stuff.

I’m going to email you with some running questions…if you don’t mind.

Take care, John…can’t wait till you are safely home!

    Welcome to the challenge Erika!

I also run with a Garmin, pump, belt full of gels and glucometer and the Nike+. I feel like a running wireless “hot-spot” at times, but I have to admit I love the Nike data. Especially because I put a lot of runs in on the treadmill and the Garmin doesn’t cover me there.
