On the horizon

Just received a phone call from my Medtronic rep, who said that she submitted the paperwork for my continuous glucose monitor. She said we should find out in about two weeks if my insurance will accept it or not. Apparently, my insurance company is the first one to enact a blanket policy for CGMS coverage, rather than the case-by-case-basis method used by others (are they finally realizing what an asset this is for controlling blood sugars). This policy was put into action last week, and my rep thought of me instantly (she is a really amazing friend as well). It will probably take a month before I have a sensor attached to my stomach telling me which direction my sugars are heading, but I’m willing to wait. If this happens, the management of my diabetes will change tremendously. I will be able to run, play with the kids, skip lunch, and sleep soundly without the cloud of uncertainty about what my sugars are doing. It’s just too bad that my collection of belly shirts won’t get much use this summer…
