Running Update

I’m not going to complain about the humidity. I ran through enough snow and ice this winter to make the outdoor sauna a welcome addition. I like finishing a run as a sweaty, dripping mess…it makes me feel like I actually did some work out there. Don’t count on me not complaining in mid-July, though. I’m not making any promises on how long this positive attitude is going to last.

I’m at 463 miles for the year. Training is about to begin (I’m loosely following a program already), so I’ll be able to reach my goal of 1000 before January. I need to start working on my core, which will help with my running form and make me stronger over the long haul. I’m going to add it in to my training schedule so I can’t shrug it off (I’m a check-it-off-the-list kind of girl). Something tells me that my belly won’t ever look like it did before I had kids, but with the gadgetry I have attached to it, and the connect-the-dot scars it leaves behind, I didn’t expect to go running around in a sports-bra any time soon.

After the half, I’ve kept my basal rate at 100% during my runs and it’s proven that I need the insulin. It’s easier to simply eat some blocks to avoid going low, rather than battle sky-rocketing blood sugars that not only slow you down, but make you feel like hell. I just have to make sure I start out the run between 160-180, and don’t bolus beforehand.

I ran 5.5 miles today. I woke up at 188, started the run at 168 (getting dressed and walking around usually brings it down without a bolus, as long as I’m not nervous…then it will go up), and finished at 102…perfect. I’m waiting for my after-run spike, which will throw me off for breakfast, but that warrants a post of it’s own.

It’s empowering when you can be in control (or at least feel like you are).

Ditto about the humidity. Better than snow, but it’s still tough trying to run through something that feels so thick you could slice it with a knife. I’ll take it….for now. It’s great how “free” I feel being able to go out running in almost nothing compared to all the layers I had to wear in the winter. Of course I’m no where near fast but I feel like I’m zoomin’!
