We headed down to the Hinckley Reservation yesterday for a birthday party, which we were an hour late for because we got lost (even with a GPS and trusty iPhone on board). I’ve never been to this particular part of the Metroparks and our scenic drive through made me anxious for a return visit. There was a large swimming lake with a rock ledge/waterfall that was full of families, and I heard about a hike that takes you through the ledges with man-made carvings to admire. The area itself was very beautiful and open…quite opposite of the city-life we are used to.
The 3rd birthday extravaganza was crazy awesome. The birthday boy, C, was beyond adorable. He kept trying to get Kade to play with him, but he was in one of his moods. Maybe he’d have more luck in a smaller social setting, plus Kade was pretty drained after an entire weekend of family events. Of course, Liv was her usual friendly self and played with the kids like she’s known them her entire life. She insisted on wearing her tutu over her dress (she hasn’t taken it off since she got it two days ago), which totally bummed out a fellow 2 year old who had to leave her’s at home. I’m completely convinced that this princess thing is innate (more on that later). It still amazes me how different my children are.
C’s daddy is a chef and the food was plentiful and delicious. There were three different types of sausage, roasted chicken, pork, prawns the size of my finger (the middle one…not the pinky), sweet corn, fingerling potatoes, salads, cheese, fruit, veggies and kick-ass homemade sangria (and Tang for the kids…the theme was the color orange…pretty cool, huh?). We are working on plans to have the host family over to our digs, but I’m already having anxiety attacks over what we would serve (thank goodness they are down to earth and could care less). Kyle, the kids and I are spoiled by the company we keep…our friends can cook like nobody’s business.
Now I’m excited and ready to dive in and plan Liv’s birthday bash. She’s been asking for a Little Mermaid party for two months now. Let’s hope this princess thing is short-lived. The feminist in me is about to lose it…
